Alouettes Dominate On Defence Forcing 9 Turnovers
History repeats itself as the 16-2 team loses in the Conference Final.
The Alouettes are moving on to the Grey Cup after a big win over one of the best teams of all time in the CFL. The tied-best record in CFL history the Toronto Argonauts went 16-2, tying the 1989 Edmonton Eskimos. Like the Eskimos, the Argos lost in the Conference Final. They won 38-17, but it easily could have been a lot more.
Toronto started strong, driving the field quick. They got the ball to the 7 yard line, a touchdown expected by everyone but Marc-Antoine Dequoy. Dequoy cut in front of Tommy Nield and brought the ball all 101 yards back to the end zone. Chad Kelly had a chance to catch him, but he gave up, turning his back and running to the bench down 7-0. The Als only had one field goal after that in the first half even though the Argos had 4 turnovers. The 3rd quarter was bad for Toronto, they got out scored 14-0 in it, and had 3 turnovers, A INT with 12:35, 8:40, and a pic-six with 5:47 left in the third. To start the fourth Cameron Dukes ran it in for a touchdown, but the next play (the kickoff) Montreal returned it for a touchdown. Late in the fourth Kelly could not reach the line to gain on third down, turning it over with 2:16 left. That happed again with 44 seconds left. All 9 turnovers were Chad Kelly. All four interceptions were Kelly, he was the one to fumble, and the turnovers on down were incomplete passes, one was almost picked off, and one was a goal line stop early. Kelly was only sacked once.
Chad Kelly did not do good, as noted above, but he still had 246 yards and a passing touchdown to DaVaris Daniels. A.J. Oulette had 71 passing yards, but Cameron Dukes had a ruching touchdown. Kelly also had 58 rushing yards, but all yards were meaningless with their nine turnovers.
Cody Fajardo had a good game, 18/25 with 175 yards one touchdown and one interception. He was the leading rusher with 38 rushing yards. They once again scored on all three sides of the ball, offence with 2 touchdowns and one field goal, defence had two pic-sixes, and there was the kick return TD. A true show was fun to watch. Now the head to the Grey Cup in Hamilton for a first time matchup, Montreal vs. Winnipeg. I am very excited to watch that one. Two great defences and a very explosive offence.
