Wagner Is Headed To The NCAA Tournament For The First Time Since 2003
The Wagner Seahawks upset the Merrimack Warriors 54-47 in low scoring game to reach March Madness for the first time since 2003.
On Tuesday, the #6 Wagner Seahawks upset the #2 Merrimack Warriors 54-47 to close out their NEC tournament run on a high note. They had to face some challenges on the way to this championship, but they kept fighting and they are now dancing.
Since this was not a high-scoring game, only two players had double-digit points on each team. Tahron Allen and Melvin Council Jr. for Wagner. Allen had 7 rebounds and 1 assist to go with his 22 points, while Council Jr. had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Keyontae Lewis was strong on the boards collecting 12 rebounds. The team went 2/15 from three-point range.
Merrimack’s star Devon Savage had 16 points and 6 rebounds. The other double figures player was Jordan McKoy who had 11 points and 3 rebounds. The team only shot 3 free throws and went 3/3.
Wagner may very likely be in the first four, it just depends on where the tournament committee places them on Selection Sunday.
These seedings (#6 and #2) are their conference tournament seeds, not NCAA rankings. In the JCU vs. Calvin game, those rankings were the NCAA rankings.
