For the first time since 2018, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have lost their firs game of the season. BC has lost every game against Toronto at BMO field since 2019. Saskatchewan is in the top 2 of the CFL power rankings, and Calgary wins to start their season.
Matchup 1: Montreal Alouettes 27 - 12 Winnipeg Blue Bombers
This was an ugly game on both sides of the ball for Winnipeg. Zach Collaros did not play too bad with 209 yards on 20 completions for 1 interception and no touchdowns. Brady Oliveira had 38 yards to lead the rush, followed by QB Chris Strevler with 32 yards, then Johnny Augustine who had 15 yards but their lone touchdown. The worst part of the game was the kicking. Sergio Castillo went 1/3 on field goals, and 0/1 on extra points. Sergio Castillo kicked 90% last year which was one of the best in the league. Cody Fajardo had 254 yards on 20 completed passes with 2 touchdowns and 1 unlucky interception. Tyson Philpot caught both touchdowns as a part of his 10 receptions for 141 yards.
Matchup 2: Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24 - 32 Calgary Stampeders
Bo Levi Mitchel showed strong signs of success with 300 passing yards on 27/38 passing for 1 touchdown and 1 interception. James Butler also played well with 119 rushing yards on 13 carries. All of this success still led to a loss for Hamilton. For Calgary, Jake Maier went 21/26 passing, or 80.76% passing for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dedrick Mills led the rushing with 87 yards. The defence was led by Demerio Houston's interception, continuing right where he left off with Winnipeg.
Matchup 3: Saskatchewan Roughriders 29 - 21 Edmonton Elks
Trevor Harris was hurt for most of last season, but in his first game back, he put up great numbers. He had 305 yards on 22/31 passing for 3 touchdowns. His. 2 interception thrown threw off his stats, but he still had a great night. AJ Ouellette played well in his first game in Saskatchewan with 32 yards and a rushing yards and 1 touchdown. Edmonton played McLeod Bethel-Thompson the entire game, and he went 33/42 for 336 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Kevin Brown had 23 rushing yards, and Dakota Prukop got 6 yards on the rushing side.
Matchup 4: BC Lions 27 - 35 Toronto Argonauts
Cameron Dukes is an American player. He grew up in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. He and his father would watch Canadian Football as he grew up, and his father once said that one day, Cameron would play in the CFL. This wasn't his debut, but it was by far his best career game. He was 21/27 passing for 254 yards, and had 3 touchdowns. Dukes also ran for a touchdown as a part of his 37 rushing yards. Ka'Deem Carey led the team with 65 rushing yards. Last year, Rasheed Bailey was my favorite player, but he's an Argo now so it's no longer him. (I still love you Rasheed) In his first game as an Argo, he had 50 receiving yards and a touchdown from a team leading 5 receptions. Thr Toronto defence was dominant with 6 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 turnovers forced. Vernon Adams Jr played very well for how much he was getting hit. He had 363 yards on 25 completions for 2 touchdowns and 1 interception thrown. BC ran for just 60 yards, 35 from William Stanback and 25 from Adams Jr.
